As we age, the loss of skin elasticity, along with the loss of fatty layers and bone reabsorption, the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and the stresses of daily life can be seen in our faces. A Face Lift is the right procedure for patients who have developed emptiness, sagginess or relaxation on the face with jowl formation and cords or bands on the neck, and when the face starts to look more square at the bottom or less tapered as when you were younger.

A Face Lift can't stop the aging process. What it can do is "set back the clock," improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck. A Face Lift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures.

The best candidate for a Face Lift is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well-defined. The age range of most candidates is between their forties and sixties, but Face Lifts can be done successfully on people in their seventies or eighties as well.

Planning Your Surgery
A Face Lift is a very individualized procedure. During your initial consultation, Dr. Hernandez will evaluate your face, including the skin and underlying bones, and discuss your personal goals. The results of your Face Lift can be dramatic or subtle, depending on how you look before surgery as well as what you establish as your specific goals. Dr. Hernandez will give her recommendations after evaluating your face and your goals. Often, a Face Lift is combined with eyelid surgery, brow surgery or chin augmentation.

The Surgery
There are a number of techniques for performing a Face Lift; every surgeon approaches the procedure in their own way. Dr. Hernandez utilizes the underlying muscle providing a more natural and longer lasting result than the "skin only lift".

During surgery the deeper tissues are tightened, the loose skin is draped up and back, and any excess is removed. The result is a smoother, fresher appearance. A Face Lift can help to smooth prominent “cords” in the neck. Tightening the tissues of the lower face and neck creates a sharper neck-to-chin angle. The overall result is a more youthful profile.

After Your Surgery
Bandages are usually removed after one to five days and most stitches will be removed after about five days.

You should be up and about in a day or two, but plan on taking it easy for the first week after surgery. Most patients are back at work about ten days to two weeks after surgery. You should avoid strenuous activity, for at least two weeks. Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.

Your New Look
Having a Face Lift doesn't stop the clock. Your face will continue to age with time, but the effects are long lasting; years later, you'll continue to look better than if you'd never had a Face Lift at all.
