Dermabrasion helps to "refinish" the skin's top layers and soften the sharp edges of surface irregularities thus giving the skin a smoother appearance. Dermabrasion can be performed most times peri-orally, on the area around the mouth. It can be used alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as Face Lift, full face laser or chemical peel. Men and women of all ages can benefit from dermabrasion since patients may have their skin resurfaced at almost any age.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DERMABRASION?

You may be a good candidate for a skin resurfacing procedure such as dermabrasion if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • vertical wrinkles around your mouth, such as those that cause lipstick "bleed"
  • acne or chicken pox scars
  • superficial facial scars from a past injury

The procedure can take just a few minutesĀ  or up to an hour and a half, depending on how large an area of skin is being treated. In some cases the doctor will choose for the procedure to be performed more than once, or in stages. This is common, especially when scarring is deep or a large area of skin is involved.

Dr. Hernandez will carefully examine your skin to determine if dermabrasion will provide you with the best results. Your skin type, the severity of any sun damage, the extent of uneven pigmentation and the depth of skin imperfections will be evaluated. Fine lines, coarse wrinkling or deep acne scarring each may require a different approach to treatment. In some cases, the doctor will recommend a different skin resurfacing technique or a combination of treatments.
